Atherosclerosis is the most frequent reason of cardiovascular diseases. It is the disease where on the internal surface of artery the lipoid material begins to get stored and turn into cholesterol plaques. Such plaques later become more thick, attaching the connective tissue where calcium salt begins to get stored. The growing plaque narrows the artery openings, or sometimes fully blocks it. Usually the large arteria suffers from atherosclerosis: aorta, coronary artery, brain nutrient arteries.

Many people suffering from atherosclerosis during many years do not feel any unpleasant symptoms. However, sooner or later when the changes in blood vessels are getting worse, it is inevitable that a person will feel specific symptoms.

The heart as any other organ constantly receives the blood which flows in to it in arteries. If a person has atherosclerotic heart disease, the supply of the heart muscle with the blood suffers. The main reason of the blood flow suffer is the plaque on the inner side of the arteria which causes the luminal occlusion. During the physical or emotional pressure when the heart works with efforts due to the luminal occlusion there is no enough of blood flow to the heart. Therefore the certain heart muscle area during the certain period does not receive enough amount of blood, and as a result there is uncomfortable feeling of chest tightness which can turn into the pain. This disease is called cardiac angina.  If such feeling lasts for more than several hours it can cause a death (heart attack) of the heart muscle area (myocard). Deterioration of heart muscle blood supply slowly leads to growth of connective (healing) tissue, so called cardiosclerosis (“sclerosis” – a scar). Cardiosclerosis can be a reason of the cardiac arrhythmia and appearance of cardiac distress. Atherosclerosis of the brain artery is characterized by the reduction of level of work effectiveness, in particular the abilities to think, memorize, leads to rapid fatigability. The most dangerous effect of artherosclerosis of brain artery is a blood stroke.

Risk factors influencing the development of the disease

There are a lot of reasons of way how the artherosclerosis develops. The main reason is certainly – the violation of nerve and endocrine regulation of metabolism. Another push to the development of the disease is unhealthy dining. Risk factors also include high blood pressure, diabetes, gout, obesity, negative hereditary background such as expressed or clear parent’s atherosclerosis; important to note that intensive mental activity which requires high nerve and psychical stress, smoking, drinking alcohol, lack of physical activity.
The main factor which develops the artherosclerosis in women’s body is climax, especially early menopause, which has been brought after oophorectomy, since estrogens positively influence on fats metabolism in the blood.

These rules of healthy dining shall be observed
in order to prevent having the disease:

  • Dietary calories shall correspond to the energy consumption of the person;
  • It is necessary to observe healthy dining where there will be small portions distributed during the day, and there will be less transformation of carbohydrates into fat, in contrast when there are rare but large food portions.
  • It is necessary to limit the consumption of animal fats, i.e. products which are rich with cholesterol (brains, liver, kidneys, egg yolk) and saturated fat acids (butter, pork, beef and lamb fat). There shall be given a preference to plant oils (sunflower, corn and olive oil) since they are rich with high unsaturated fat acids which positively influence on metabolism of fats.
  • When including into diet the carbohydrates there shall be given the preference to the products which are rich with cellulose and pectins (vegetables, not sweet fruits, berries) which suspend the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines, and to limit eating of easily digested carbohydrates (sugar, honey, jam, starchy foods, rice and semola food).
  • There shall be enough of protein. At least 60-70% of it shall be animal protein (poultry meat, fish, unfatty yogurt cheese, kefir, sour milk, skim milk, egg albumen). These products are rich with so called lipotropic substances which positively influence on the fat metabolism. Lecithin stabilizes the amount of cholesterol in blood and reduces its absorption to the vascular walls. Methionine and choline prevent the obesity of the liver, providing its normal functioning.
  • Diet shall limit the food and food products which activate the nervous system (extractives of meat and fish, spices, strong coffee and tea).
  • It is necessary to maintain the normal amount of vitamins in the diet. Especially important are vitamins C, PP, В6, В12, niacin, bioflavonoids. Ascorbic acid strengthens the break of cholesterol in the liver, strengthens the conjunctive tissues of vascular and reduces the penetration of the vascular wall.  В6  provides the normal fat metabolism, prevents the obesity in the liver. It is necessary to limit eating Vitamin D with food since it stimulates the atherosclerosis. This can be reached by limiting or exclusion from diet the egg yolk, liver, kidney, fish fat, caviar, butter.
  • Diet shall include a lot of magnesium, margan, iodine, cobalt. Magnesium reduces the blood cholesterol, intense the excretion of cholesterol. Iodine improves the work of thyroid body, the hormone of which has the antisclerotic effect. Iodine also improves the blood-clotting factor. Margan and cobalt positively influences the lipid metabolism. Therefore, it is required to eat the buckwheat, oatmeal, bran bread, sea products, etc.
  • Sodium chloride shall be limited to 8-10 grams a day, since the excessive salt eating leads to the progress of arthesclerosis
Thus it is possible to prevent or delay the progress of the disease if to bear in mind important factors. Healthy dining will improve the effect of medical therapy, and sometimes it plays even the main role, since the food products which are being absorbed by the body actively influence on the level and intensity of metabolism on all levels of body regulation.
