Atopic dermatitis is a genetic disposition to the excess development of immunoglobulin E as a reaction to any contact with allergens (food, air, etc.). There are three phases of atopic dermatitis: infantile, childish, and adult. Atopic dermatitis also known as diathesis is caused by genetic disposition, therefore if you or your husband/wife had similar symptoms in childhood, you should watch your diet. Usually atopic dermatitis is a children’s disease.

The diet during such dermatitis shall be the following: it is required to eliminate the following allergens – citrus fruits, strong tea, coffee, strawberry, exotic fruits, spices, smoked food, spicy cheese, eggs, caviar, condensed milk and fat milk products.

In childhood this issue usually appears as a reaction to the food allergen, therefore it is required to know main clinical evidence of atopic dermatitis which are characterized by:

  • Skin changes (strophulus, atopic dermatitis, Quincke’s disease, perioral and perianal dermatitis);
  • Digestive tract disorders (posseting, flatulence, stomach ache, diarrhea, astriction);
  • Breathing organs disorders (nasal allergy, rhinosinusitis, asthmatoid bronchitis, bronchial asthma).
It is important to note that the age and risk factors play important role during atopic dermatitis. Younger the child is, wider clinical symptoms of the disease are. It is found that children who are younger than 1 year old have problems with lactoprotein, lactose, puree and juices from bright fruits.

Dermatitis with children from 1 till 3 years old can be caused by: fruits and berries with bright color, citrus and grain crops.

Children older than 3 years old can have serious problems caused by: pickled products, marinade, spices, cacao, chocolate, peanut, shrimps, crabs, crayfish, some types of fish.

How to cure it? Which products shall be excluded from diet during atopic dermatitis?

During atopic dermatitis it is important to exclude from diet:
  • Meat and fish broth, fried meat;
  • Chocolate, cacao;
  • Citrus (lemon, mandarine, oranges, grapefruits);
  • Melon, honey, pomegranate, nuts, mushrooms, canned food and other products containing preservatives and colorants.
Cow milk, river fish and some sea fish, caviar, cacao and products out of it, soybean products, chocolate, mushrooms, tomatoes, carrot are most likely allergens. It is better to exclude from diet such berries as strawberry, raspberry, wild strawberry, black currant, and date plum at all. Citrus food is also a cause for diathesis, be aware of pineapples, honey and nuts in kid’s diet. Carrot and beet, wheat and corn products also can provoke the allergy. Eggs can be a cause of the diathesis.

It is worth adding to the diet the plant oil (sun oil, olive oil and other) in the amount of up to 30g a day in form of spices to the salads. Also there is prescribed vitamin containing the mixture of linoleic and linolenoic acid, or in high doses (4 capsules two times a day), or average (1-2 capsules 2 times a day). It is most effective for adults.

Products with average allergy activity which can be taken moderately but with carefulness are: bananas, peaches, cranberry and apricots. Please be aware when adding to the diet the corn, turkey and buckwheat. Corn, rabbit meat, green pepper, and even potato can cause diathesis and brashes on cheeks.

Products which have low allergen effect and are allowed in diet with atopic dermatitis are: green and yellow apples, pears, white currant and gooseberry. Also products allowed include – courgettes, squash, turnip, and pumpkin of whiter color, plum, white cherry and watermelon. Lamb and horsemeat are allowed as products not causing the diathesis.

What kind of diet is recommended if a person has atopic dermatitis?
  • Fruits – dry fruits, pears, white cherry, green and yellow apples;
  • Vegetables – cucumbers, pumkin, courgettes, squash, parsley, and dill;
  • Milk products – cottage cheese, homemade yogurt without any preservatives, sour milk;
  • Meat products – boiled beef, lamb, horse meat;
  • Porridge – buckwheat, rice, oat;
  • Soups – vegetable with olive oil dressing.
Thus, during 3-12 months it is necessary to adopt individual hypoallergic diet. It is found out that most people with food allergy and atopic dermatitis adopt the diet with rather vast number of products, excluding 3-6 products only, which are not vitally important (basic diet products) and are easily replaceable. Certainly, for a long period of time the diet shall exclude products containing colorants, aromatics, preservatives, and energy drinks and other (i.e. Coca cola, Sprite and other similar drinks, chewing gum, etc.).

At time of crudescence it is necessary to avoid eating eggs, fish, shell fish, citrus, nuts, and also various food as smoked and salty products, reduce adding salt and sugar. Strict diet observance will certainly ease the disease and guarantee the effective result of the treatment
